What are Foil Stamped cards?
You may have seen elegant lettering that reflects light on wedding invitations or birth announcements. These were probably foil pressed cards. Foil pressing goes by many names, including foil stamping, hot stamping, foil printing, foil blocking, and more. No matter which name you choose, they all refer to the processes of binding thin metallic foils to paper.
Civilizations were doing archaic versions of foil printing almost a thousand years ago. It mainly came in the form of pressing gold leaf into leather book covers for decoration. Since books were all handmade and rare to come by, foil printing was as well.
In fifteenth-century Europe, printing suddenly became easier and more accessible through the invention of Johannes Gutenberg’s movable type printing press. Additionally, this press was the predecessor of modern letterpress techniques. As books became more widely spread, the demand for gold leaf foil-pressed book covers did as well. This also made the price of gold skyrocket.
In modern-day, foil pressing is done by a machine instead of by hand. However, it still requires the handiwork and close attention of a craftsman. While there are different variations in the technique, modern foil printing follows this structure.
First, a computer-generated design is printed as a film negative and placed on top of a photosensitive plate. When exposed to light, the design hardens and stays raised on the plate and the rest of the space is washed away. This creates a die, or the specialized stamp used for foil pressing.
This die is inserted in a printing press specifically designed for foil stamping. Next, the die is heated up. Paper is fed through the press as foil is placed between the paper and the die. The hot die presses foil into each sheet of paper. This causes the foil to bond to the paper’s surface so that it can’t come off, creating the finished foil pressed card.
You may have noticed that some cards have printed photos or designs as well as foil pressed designs. For example, a foil-pressed save the date card may have “Save The Date” written in foil letters on top of the couple’s picture. In this case, the couple’s picture was first printed normally onto all of the cards. Then, these cards underwent the foil printing process to add the foil lettering on top.

These may appeal to young couples or people who want cards in a Bohemian style. Lastly, red and green foil will be the hit of this holiday season. Beautiful, festive, and new to Minted this last year, red and green foil are the quintessential elements you’ll want for an elegant Christmas card.
In addition, the foil pressing process does not use any ink. This means that foil can be printed atop paper of any color and it will still show up. Because of this, foil printing opportunities are endless and can be incorporated into cards of any kind.
Another reason to choose foil pressed cards this holiday season is that foil pressed products are completely recyclable. This makes foil Christmas cards a great option for those who focus on sustainability.
