About the work

The photograph explores two of the most basic elements in photography: Light and Colour. The aim is to focus solely on both elements without the inclusion of any human activity, which could divert the viewer from such basic principles. Hence the use of different techniques such as multiple exposure, the exposure of film to different light sources and the capture of images completely out of focus play a crucial role in the series. I first got the idea of exploring with negatives while developing rolls of film at the lab. I would always project on the enlarger the useless ends of the film strips, and distract my self looking for interesting patterns within. They reminded me about the abstract paintings from Barnett Newman, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko and the New York School from the postwar era. After some time I started to think on how I could recreate those film strips, not looking to the photograph as such, but as a medium to paint with light, just like the abstract paintings. I started to think about the rules of exposure in a different way; I started to think how i could use my camera to to create specific patterns, trying to recreate different types of brush strokes. I also started to integrate other techniques such as multiple exposure photography, the use of old lens filters, the use of a variety of light sources from any place on my surroundings. At the beginning it was difficult to place the images in competitions and exhibitions, since they never qualified as either photographs nor paintings. At some point I decided that this practice would be something personal for me to enjoy, I never knew how to promote my work. Thanks to Minted I discovered a niche where to promote my work.
