About the work
In this mixed-media artwork, I have created a painterly version of the state of Ohio that is inspired by symbols unique to the state. Here, the state is rendered in impasto applications of white paint, in reference to the petals of white trillium, the state flower. Intermixed within are striations, some gray, some colorful, both a nod to the layered qualities of Ohio flint, the state gemstone, which, when polished, reveals an array of vivid colors and often includes swirls of red, orange, and gold, also referenced here in bold form, through the variegated brushstrokes and layered pastel marks that comprise the background.
