About the work

In this mixed-media artwork, I have created a painterly version of the state of Washington inspired by the state's nature-derived symbols. Here, variegated brushstrokes in greens and blues combine to reference the colors of bluebunch wheatgrass, the state grass, and western hemlock, the state tree. Completing the piece are impasto layers of ivory paint intermixed with subtle rosy accents, a nod to both the petals of the coast rhododendron, the state flower, and the layered qualities of petrified wood, the state gem.
