About the work
In this mixed-media artwork I have created a painterly version of the state of Wisconsin inspired by the state's designated symbols. Here, subtly textured brushstrokes in pale tints of red combine to symbolize red granite, the state rock. Surrounding land appears in layered tints of golden hues, representative of the yellow of the honeybee, the state insect, and the fall leaves of the sugar maple, the state tree. Completing the piece are portions of the Great Lakes, rendered here in a light tint of green, as a subtle nod to the green leaves of the sugar maple in spring and summer.
