About the work

In this mixed-media piece I have created a painterly version of the state of Massachusetts. Here, impasto applications of white paint combine with hints of color to form a work that is subtly suggestive of the symbols unique to the state. The background is rendered in variegated hues of green and blue, both designated state colors, as is the red intermixed throughout the state, which doubly serves as a symbolic representation of cranberries, the state berry. Completing the work are subtle gray stripes, a nod to both the tabby, the designated state cat, and the black and white of the Boston terrier, the state dog.
