About the work

In this mixed-media artwork, I have created a painterly version of the state of New York. Here, impasto applications of white paint combine with bolder colors across the piece to form a work suggestive of the symbols unique to the state. The background appears in pale tints of red orange, and bodies of water in bold washes of blue, both collectively representative of the colors of the eastern bluebird, the state bird. Completing the piece are subtle brushstrokes across the state in red, to symbolize the rose, the state flower, and the apple, the state fruit, along with textured gray striping mixed with touches of gold, to represent the bay scallop, the state shell.
