About the work

Jihye Back Kim captures the fleeting nature of ephemeral moments with her gestural, minimalist style. Through paintings and installations, her work explores the phenomena of depicting time within visual space. With deep consideration of process and materials, Kim utilizes the personality of multiple artistic mediums to explore the dynamic and differing qualities of each. Mixing media on canvas or paper, Kim's sensitive strokes in paint, pastel, and pencil capture alternating experiences of rhythm or stillness, energy or rest. Arrangements of line, material, and visual weight create the sense of transitory moment, an emptiness filled with dramatic traces of movement. This combination of emptiness and movement builds a unique energy, hinting at the lawless state of nature and time, yet expressing an underlying order that is harmonious and beautiful.
