About the work
In this mixed-media artwork, I have created a painterly version of the state of Michigan inspired by the natural features unique to its landscape. Here, layers of color peek from underneath textured applications of ivory paint, to subtly reference the glacial origins of Petosky stone, the designated stone of Michigan. Fluid watercolor runs through the bordering Great Lakes, which are set against a vibrant background composed of variegated brushstrokes of rich greens, as a nod to the colors of chlorastrolite, the state gem found on Michigan's Isle Royale.
