How They Met

We first met on the subway in New York City and re-met a year later at a party through mutual friends. Brittany remembers Stanley as the cute (but rude) guy on the subway who wouldn’t look at her when she was talking to him. Stanley remembers Brittany as the beautiful girl he didn’t want to disrespect by staring at her too hard.

The Proposal

Stanley proposed at Millesime Restaurant in the Carlton Hotel in New York City, the same restaurant where he asked me to be his girlfriend one year and 9 months earlier.

Wedding venue

Since we had many wedding guests who would be flying in from the East Coast and overseas, we wanted to keep the location easily accessible and decided on the Bently Reserve in the heart of downtown San Francisco.

Their aesthetic

We wanted our wedding to be a blend of our styles. Stanley is traditional and I am self-proclaimed "funky," so we went with a traditional, elegant theme with some unexpected twists.

Touches of gold

I loved playing with different shades of gold throughout the wedding. I wore crushed velvet gold shoes. Our dishes had this cool Art Deco design and the tablecloths were a soft, shimmery champagne color. Champagne gold was also the best choice for my bridesmaids, who wore a shimmery, one-shoulder dress that flattered all 10 skin tones and shapes.

Wedding Favors

Each guest got a personalized recipe card from Blue Apron featuring one of the entrees served at the wedding, along with a spice kit to make the dish.

In Remembrance

I spray-painted picture frames a shimmery champagne color and filled them with photos of loved ones who had passed away.

Wedding Tip

Keep your hair and makeup team through your first-look pictures. We took our photos outside and it was windy—my hair was toast right before the ceremony. I was lucky that my hairstylist is a friend and was attending the wedding!

On Minted

When we moved to San Francisco, we received a holiday card from friends that was from Minted. I remember really liking the finish and feel of the card, so when I started looking for wedding invitations, I started with Minted!

Wedding Invitation

We chose the design “Gold Notes" and it was perfect! It set the tone for our wedding, and the foil on the invitation and reply card really popped! We got so many compliments on them.

Memorable Moments

During the ceremony, we “jumped the broom,” which is an African American tradition that is seldom seen anymore at weddings. It felt like the right way to acknowledge ancestors who weren’t there. We "broke the kola nut" at the beginning of the reception, which is a Nigerian tradition of acknowledging elders and the important people in the room, including the people that traveled far to celebrate with us.

First Dance

We chose “As” by Stevie Wonder. It's one of our favorite songs and our cake topper had a lyric from the chorus written on it.

The Toasts

Each of our siblings spoke and it was so special to have each speech be given by someone who has known you your whole life.
