STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 41-cent “Coneflower” postage stamp is part of the United States Postal Service (USPS) Beautiful Blooms series, a modern floral program introduced to showcase flowers as expressive works of art rather than strict botanical studies. Issued by the USPS on August 10th, 2007, in Portland, Oregon, the series reflected a mid-2000s design shift toward bold color, painterly style, and emotionally resonant imagery suitable for everyday correspondence.
The stamp features a pink coneflower (Echinacea) shown in close-up, with elongated petals radiating outward in soft pink/rose and magenta tones. At the center, the flower’s distinctive raised cone is rendered in warm, textured orange hues, creating a strong focal point and visual contrast. Subtle shading and gentle transitions of color give the petals a sense of movement and depth, while the background remains minimal to keep attention on the bloom itself. The overall composition feels lively yet balanced—capturing the coneflower’s associations with strength, renewal, and enduring beauty.
FLOWER INFORMATION: The pink coneflower, also known as Echinacea, has many uses, including medicinal, habitat restoration, and is a symbol of wellness. Native Americans used the coneflower to treat a variety of ailments, including toothaches, sore throats, snakebites, and respiratory infections. The plant has been used as an anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-venom. The roots were chewed or used in poultices, and the leaves and petals were used to make tea. The coneflower is a pollinator magnet, attracting butterflies and bees. It can grow in poor soil and is drought-tolerant, making it a good choice for habitat restoration. It’s spent flowers also provide food for birds in the winter.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Coneflower (Echinacea) has long been associated with restorative strength—both physical and spiritual—making it a symbol of inner immunity and the ability to recover after challenge or depletion. Spiritually, the coneflower’s strong, raised central cone represents a grounded core or inner compass—steadfast and protective—while the radiating petals suggest energy moving outward into the world. This structure reflects the balance between self-care and generosity, reminding us that true giving flows from a centered, protected self. The flower’s ability to thrive in varied conditions further reinforces its symbolism of adaptability and endurance.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The “Beautiful Blooms” series is a set of 10 different flowers designed by artist Carl T. Herrman of Carlsbad, California, and was first issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS) on August 10, 2007 in Portland, Oregon. Photographer Mark Laita of Culver City, California, created the artistic images of the beautiful blooms featured on these stamps. Unlike botanical or garden-specific programs that focused on realism or seasonal cycles, this series highlighted bold, decorative blossoms presented almost as portraits—lush, close-up views that emphasize color, texture, and visual impact. These magnificent flowers may be seen coast to coast, not only in gardens, but floating on ponds, and adorning trees. The flowers featured were popular, widely recognized blooms commonly associated with bouquets and celebrations. The ten flowers depicted on the Beautiful Blooms series stamps are echinacea (also known as the purple coneflower), tulip, water lily, poppy, spider chrysanthemum, orange gerbera daisy, iris, dahlia, vulcan magnolia, and red gerbera daisy.
