STAMP HISTORY: This 41c Reindeer postage stamp, part of the “Holiday Knits” set, was a Contemporary Christmas issue released on October 25, 2007, in New York, New York, as part of a set of four stamps. Inspired by traditional Norwegian sweaters and Christmas stockings, this cozy stamp features a nostalgic red reindeer (or stag), designed to look like a machine-knitted winter pattern.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The 2007 “Holiday Knits” Reindeer postage stamp, officially a "dignified stag" depicted in a cozy machine-knitted style, holds cultural and spiritual significance related to themes of guidance, resilience, rebirth, and the enduring spirit of nature. Its connection to holiday tradition and its symbolic roots in ancient mythology contribute to its meaning. The stamp's machine-knitted appearance, inspired by traditional Norwegian sweaters and knitted stockings, evokes a sense of nostalgia for handmade crafts and the cozy feeling of the holiday season. While the animal on the stamp is officially a stag, it can be interpreted as a reindeer, connecting it to the folklore of Santa Claus and winter celebrations. The image of a winter stag or reindeer connects with the history of winter celebrations and adds a touch of warmth and tradition to seasonal correspondence. In cultures worldwide, deer and stags have been seen as spiritual messengers and guides. This can symbolize guidance on one's path or finding a direction in life. The annual shedding and regrowth of antlers is a powerful symbol of the cycle of death and rebirth, renewal, and the promise of life after the darkness of winter, particularly associated with the winter solstice. In Celtic mythology and other traditions, the stag is often a guide to the "Otherworld" or is seen as a representation of spiritual quests and the pursuit of enlightenment. The image of a stag with a cross in its antlers became a Christian symbol of Christ's sacrifice and resurrection, linking the animal to themes of faith and eternal life. Deer and stags symbolize a balance between strength and gentleness, embodying both the virility and power of nature while also representing grace and peace. The stag is sometimes seen as a sacred guardian and was believed in folklore to ward off evil spirits, bringing good fortune to those who honored it.
SERIES HISTORY: The 2007 “Holiday Knits” stamps are part of the United States Postal Service's (USPS) annual series of contemporary holiday-themed postage stamps. The se-tenant set of four classic wintertime images — a stag, an evergreen tree, a snowman, and a teddy bear — was designed by nationally known illustrator Nancy Stahl. Inspired by traditional Norwegian sweaters and Christmas stockings, Stahl used a computer program to create the designs, converted the images to stitches, and then used a knitting machine to make the actual pieces, which were then photographed for the final stamp designs. The stamps made their debut at a first-day-of-issue ceremony on Thursday, October 25, at the 2007 American Stamp Dealers Association's Postage Stamp Mega-Event at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
