STAMP HISTORY: This 44c “Winter Holidays” Snowman postage stamp is a United States Postal Service (USPS) commemorative issue from 2009 released as part of a set of four Contemporary Christmas stamps. Issued on October 8, 2009, in New York, NY, this stamp is part of a series celebrating popular holiday figures seen in decorations and gift wrap designs. The artwork, created by Joseph Cudd in his first stamp project for the Postal Service, features a cheerful snowman with a top hat, coal buttons, and a carrot nose, and is dusted with large snowflakes.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The first known image of a snowman appeared in a 1380 “Book of Hours”, a medieval prayer book. In the Middle Ages, snowmen were a form of free public art, built to pass the long winters. They were often used for political and social commentary, with people creating effigies to satirize authority figures and express public dissatisfaction. During the 19th century, as winter holidays became more family-centered and festive, the snowman's image shifted from a figure of protest to a cheerful symbol of holiday joy. The snowman's modern identity was solidified in the mid-20th century with the song "Frosty the Snowman" (1950) and its subsequent animated TV special (1969). Frosty's playful, magical nature firmly established the snowman as a jolly and lovable holiday icon. Building a snowman is a quintessential winter activity that fosters creativity and brings people together during the cold months. The traditional image of a snowman with a carrot nose and coal buttons has become deeply ingrained in holiday culture. This familiar figure evokes a sense of nostalgia for childhood and simpler times. Snowmen are now widely featured on holiday decorations, gift wrap, greeting cards, and in movies, solidifying their role as a staple of modern winter festivities.

SERIES HISTORY: The 44-cent Contemporary Christmas “Winter Holidays” stamps are a series of four USPS postage stamps issued on October 8, 2009, in New York, NY, that celebrate popular figures from the holiday season. The stamp art, created by artist Joseph Cudd in his first project for the United States Postal Service, depicted a reindeer, a snowman, a gingerbread man, and a toy soldier with festive borders of evergreens, stars, wreaths, and holly. Cudd owned a gift wrap and print design firm. To create these stamps under the direction of designer Richard Sheaff of Scottsdale, AZ, Cudd first sketched the designs by hand and then finished them on the computer using a graphics tablet. The series was designed to add a festive touch to holiday correspondence, featuring figures commonly seen in holiday decorations and gift wrap designs from Thanksgiving to New Year's.
