STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 41-cent “Water Lily” postage stamp is part of the United States Postal Service (USPS) Beautiful Blooms series, a modern floral program introduced to showcase flowers as expressive works of art rather than strict botanical studies. Issued by the USPS on August 10th, 2007, in Portland, Oregon, the series reflected a mid-2000s design shift toward bold color, painterly style, and emotionally resonant imagery suitable for everyday correspondence.
The stamp’s design features a pink water lily blossom shown in close-up, isolated from its environment rather than depicted floating on water. Broad, layered petals open outward in gentle shades of blush and rose, rendered with smooth tonal transitions and subtle shading that create a velvety, sculptural quality. The flower’s center is softly illuminated in red and yellow, drawing the eye inward, while the background remains understated and unobtrusive. This intimate presentation emphasizes form, color, and balance, highlighting the water lily’s associations with serenity, refinement, and inner calm.
FLOWER INFORMATION: Water lilies are aquatic plants with large leaves and colorful flowers that float on water. They have thick underground stems called rhizomes that can spread out and grow new stems. Water lily flowers are showy, with many petals and can be white, pink, purple, yellow, or red.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Pink water lilies symbolize joy, friendship, and love. They are also associated with compassion, devotion, and spirituality. In ancient Egypt, the water lily was a symbol of rebirth and creation. In the Victorian era, the water lily was a popular motif in jewelry. In Native American lore, the water lily was once a star that fell from the sky and changed into a flower.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The “Beautiful Blooms” series is a set of 10 different flowers designed by artist Carl T. Herrman of Carlsbad, California, and was first issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS) on August 10, 2007 in Portland, Oregon. Photographer Mark Laita of Culver City, California, created the artistic images of the beautiful blooms featured on these stamps. Unlike botanical or garden-specific programs that focused on realism or seasonal cycles, this series highlighted bold, decorative blossoms presented almost as portraits—lush, close-up views that emphasize color, texture, and visual impact. These magnificent flowers may be seen coast to coast, not only in gardens, but floating on ponds, and adorning trees. The flowers featured were popular, widely recognized blooms commonly associated with bouquets and celebrations. The ten flowers depicted on the Beautiful Blooms series stamps are echinacea (also known as the purple coneflower), tulip, water lily, poppy, spider chrysanthemum, orange gerbera daisy, iris, dahlia, vulcan magnolia, and red gerbera daisy.
