Punto in aria— "stitches in the air"—is one of the earliest styles of eyelet lace dating back to the 1600’s.

Hand-sewn eyelet is labor-intensive to produce by hand and traditionally was only used as trim, for women's underclothing, and children's garments. Eyelet was originally cut and embroidered by hand before machines. These are hand “embroidered” in clay
