About the work

This mixed-media artwork features a painterly version of the Hawaiian Islands. Here, variegated watercolor brushstrokes in blues and greens combine to form the Pacific Ocean. This serves as a fittingly aquatic backdrop for the archipelago of islands, each first painted uniquely in a color chosen to coordinate with the island's designated flower, in hues of white, purple, yellow, green, orange, pink, gray, and red, before being finished with a wash of opaque, sandy-colored paint, for unified color across the composition.
