About the work

In this mixed-media artwork, I’ve created a painterly rendition of Nebraska inspired by the state’s nature-derived symbols. Here, impasto applications of white paint intermix with hints of yellow, gray, and red orange, a nod to the yellow and white feathers of the western meadowlark, the state bird; the yellow plumes of goldenrod, the state flower; and the multicolored layers of prairie agate, the state rock. Completing the piece is a lightly textured, blue-green ground, a subtle reference to the bluish-green leaves of little bluestem, the state grass.
