How They Met

We originally met in university but never really spoke—Ryan will say it's because I never went to the class we had together! Years later, we ran into each other at a club in Toronto but didn't exchange numbers; then, we ran into each other again at a football game that same week. We went out after that and the rest is history—we're going on six years together.

The Proposal

We got engaged during a trip to New Orleans. I thought we were waiting for an Uber ride to brunch, but Ryan had actually planned for a photographer to capture the marriage proposal! We were staying in a beautiful historic house-turned-hotel, so when a stranger offered to take our picture, I was all for it. Little did I know that Ryan had gotten down on one knee right there and the photographer captured the whole thing—it was perfect because he knew I would have wanted the moment photographed and the pictures also served as our engagement photos. We always laugh because he proposed in October and the next day, the hotel’s porch was covered with really aggressive Halloween decorations, so Ryan was really glad he popped the question early on during the trip.

Wedding Venue

I came across The Doctor's House when I attended a wedding show and they had a booth. Even still, it was just one of the probably six venues that we went to see in person. We did a lot of research leading up to those in-person meetings—we wanted to be sure we only looked at venues that had what we were looking for: a place with character, beautiful grounds, a location that was convenient for guests, available for our desired time frame, etc.

Wedding Vibes

We wanted something that was simple and romantic but would still be classic when we looked back on our wedding day. We also tried to avoid anything too theme-y given that we got married around the holidays. The mood of our wedding was very true to our regular style.

The Invitation

We chose our invitation— "Brooklyn" by Lauren Chism—because it fit so seamlessly with all of our other wedding components. The design was super simple and classic, and it set the tone for what guests could expect on the wedding day.

Color palette

We chose a monochrome theme with white and black being the main colors, with pops of deep burgundy and greenery incorporated in the florals. It went with our simple and romantic vibe, and was fitting for the time of year.

Ceremony exit

We had so much fun with the tradition of ringing the chapel bell and our confetti exit was a great moment to cap it off.

Wedding Favors

Ryan always says we're a perfect match, so we gave guests mini apothecary bottles filled with matchsticks, with a Minted sticker.

Wedding advice

Identify the aspects that are most important to each of you and plan around those things, including your budget allocation. Also, enjoy it! Everyone said we would be so stressed but we had the best time planning our wedding.
