You’re engaged—and what better way to celebrate than by commemorating this moment with engagement photos? Since most of us don’t have a ton of practice posing for a photographer, we’ve compiled a list of poses that feel natural but look stunning. So whether you’re planning to post your photos on social media or use them for your save the dates or first holiday cards as a married couple, these poses can help you capture your one-of-a-kind relationship.
CLASSIC POSE IDEAS
1. Holding Hands
A simple hand-holding shot is a classic. Opt for a wide lens effect to capture the entire landscape, a horizontal shot of the two of you, or a close-up of your hands to showcase your beautiful ring.

2. Profile
Standing close to one another with your foreheads or noses touching allows you to gaze into the other person’s eyes while still having a portion of your face showing in the photo.
3. Walking
Grab each other’s hands and begin walking at a normal pace, changing your positioning from time to time. You can walk toward your photographer, walk sideways with one person leading and looking back at the other, or walk away from the photographer.
4. Reenactment of the Engagement
Have whoever proposed get down on one knee and hold the hand of the other person. If you’re the one getting proposed to, reenact your reaction: Were you smiling from ear to ear? So shocked that one of your hands covered your mouth?
5. Showing Off The Ring
Feeling shy about being the focal point of the photo? Try holding hands, placing your left hand on your fiancé’s shoulder, or pushing your hand out in front of you so it’s closest to the camera.
6. Head on Shoulder
Sitting or standing, you can both face the camera with one person slightly behind their partner, holding onto their arm and leaning their head on their shoulder. Or your partner can face backward and reach your hand underneath his arm and lay it on his shoulder while you lean your head on his shoulder.
7. Classic Portrait
Wrap your arms around each other or hold hands, face the camera, and smile. Your photographer should zoom in on the two of you and crop out any distracting elements in the background.
8. Side by Side
Stand close to one another while positioning your bodies so that they both face the camera, hold hands, and look at one another.
9. Facing Each Other
Replicate the pose usually reserved for your wedding vows by facing each other while standing just far enough away that you can hold your partner’s hands.
10. Popping Champagne
One person should open the champagne while the other stands close by. Save this pose for the end of your shoot in case you spill or spray any champagne on your clothing.
11. Cheersing
Use the champagne that you just popped to pour yourselves a drink and take a photo while cheersing. Make an actual toast for the most natural reaction.
ROMANTIC POSE IDEAS
12. Sharing a Kiss
Give your guests a preview of your first kiss as a married couple. You can even place your left hand on the face or shoulder of your fiancé to show off your ring.
13. Embracing
Experiment with embracing while standing up, sitting down, facing each other, and facing the same direction. You can choose to look at one another, look at the camera, or look away from the camera.
14. Hug from Behind
This engagement pose allows you to embrace one another while facing the camera. Experiment with sitting down, standing up, and mixing up who is doing the hugging. It’s a sweet touch to have the person in front lock eyes with their partner.
15. Forehead Kiss
Stand facing one another and have the taller person doing the kissing.
16. Dip
To get the most natural-looking shot, we recommend actually dancing into the leadup to the dip and maintaining eye contact with each other as you strike a graceful pose. The person being dipped can extend their free arm or hold their partner's shoulder or neck.
17. Wrapped in a Blanket
Get cozy by enveloping yourselves in something warm.
PLAYFUL POSE IDEAS
18. With a Pet
Including your furry friend lightens the mood and gives you something to interact with besides each other. Have your pet on the ground with one of you crouching down on either side, and either look down at your pet or at one another.
19. Playful Piggyback
If you want to go for a more silly, playful pose, hop on your fiancé’s back and have them walk or spin you around.
20. Lifting Up in the Air
Wrap your arms around one another tight and have the person who is being lifted pop one or two of their legs up in the air. To make this look even more natural, run and jump into your partner's arms.
21. Twirling
Hold your partner’s hand and have them lift it up high in the air while you twirl underneath. Ask the photographer to play some music to get the rhythm going, and consider wearing a long, flowy dress that creates a beautiful shape when you spin.
22. Doing Chores
Hear us out: Shots of you two playfully making the bed, perched atop a washing machine in a laundromat, or cooking together can be tons of fun.
23. Crossing the Street
Combine intimacy with action by linking hands while walking across a crosswalk. This works best if there’s a little space between the two of your bodies.
24. Jumping
Spring into the air separately or holding hands. Put a unique twist on this pose by jumping off a sand dune, on a trampoline, or in front of a graphic mural.
25. On a Ride
If you have an amusement park or carnival nearby, hop on the ferris wheel or carousel for a colorful shot that’s certain to put a smile on your face.
UNIQUE POSE IDEAS
26. Faraway Scenery Shot
If you want to highlight the city you live in or an outdoor setting you both enjoy, have your photographer stand at a distance so the backdrop takes up the majority of the frame. You can pose however you’d like, but the most common way is to walk hand in hand.
27. Sitting on the Ground
Sitting gives the photographer an opportunity to get your full body in the shot while still being close up. Sit side by side, in your partner’s lap, or even back to back.
28. A Non-face Photo
This look hints at what your love is like when nobody is watching. The simplest way to achieve it is to have your backs facing the camera while you either hold hands or rest your head on your partner's shoulder.
29. Back to Back
Stand or sit, and switch off who is facing the camera and who is looking straight ahead. For a cooler, more sophisticated pose, keep your faces serious.
30. Sitting Apart
Position yourselves on opposite ends of a bench or long seat and face each other. This arrangement creates visual interest and captures the space between you while still highlighting your connection.
31. In the Water
Wade into the ocean or a river, or even pose in front of a waterfall.
32. Aerial
If your photographer has a drone, they can shoot you from a bird’s eye view sprawled out on a lawn or sitting in a classic car or paddle boat.
33. On the Rocks
Climb (safely!) to a high point or promontory, or even perch between two canyon walls or a dramatic backdrop. For a striking contrast with Mother Nature, dress up in formal attire.
34. In a Window
Have your photographer shoot you from the sidewalk while you sit in a cafe or restaurant. You can be sipping coffee or leaning in for a kiss.
35. In the Snow
Make the most of a winter engagement photo shoot by making a snowman, throwing snowballs at each other, or sledding down a hill.
36. In a Vehicle
Pose on a boat, on a motorcycle, or in a convertible.
37. On a Bridge
Walk across a suspension bridge for more of a dramatic shot, or sit on the side of a small bridge for something a little more romantic.
38. Overlooking a Vista
Your favorite lookout spot can also make a great setting for your engagement shot.
39. In the Rain
Pose under a clear umbrella for two or just let yourselves get caught in the rain (waterproof mascara is a must).
5 TIPS FOR GETTING THE PERFECT SHOT
Your engagement photos will likely feature prominently in at least one piece of your wedding stationery (which our experts can help you customize with a free consultation) and in your wedding website, so a little prep can go a long way. Here’s how to ensure you love your photos almost as much as your fiancé.
- Follow the sun. For a truly memorable shot, try to schedule your photo shoot around the sunset, aka the golden hour, when the sun is positioned low in the sky.
- Get chatty. Tell a joke or talk to each other to spark natural smiles or laughter.
- Complement each other. While you don’t want to wear matching outfits, refrain from wearing patterns that will clash with one another, especially if you plan on posing close together.
- Pick the perfect spot. Stumped on where to shoot your photos? Consider the location where you had your first date, your favorite places to go together, or even an upcoming vacation destination.
- Clean up nicely. If you plan on asking your photographer to zoom in on your engagement ring, don’t forget to have it professionally cleaned beforehand, and make sure your nails are manicured.
